Chapter 102: Night Visit to the Police Station
Natural Disasters and the End of the World
An Nan watched her dog devour its food with gusto, gently stroking its head with affection.
She used to try to control its portions, afraid it would get fatter and fatter, eventually turning into a little pig.
But after hearing Bai Wenbin’s words today, her mindset changed.
So what if it turns into a little pig?
If it mutates, then let it mutate—the bigger, the better. If it grows as strong as a wild boar, that’s much safer than being a small dog.
If all those terrifying animals out there can mutate, why can’t her dog?
If everyone’s mutating, who’s afraid of whom!
She was determined to train Fugui into the fiercest, toughest French bulldog around!
No one would dare bully her or her dog.
Tonight, not only did she give Fugui extra food, she also added more protein—
Just in case it only gained fat and not muscle.
Watching Fugui eat so happily, An Nan took out a pre-made lunchbox from her space:
Shredded pork with garlic sauce, scallion lamb, garlic baby bok choy, winter melon soup, and a bowl of multigrain rice.
After eating, An Nan slipped into her space to check on the isatis root she’d recently planted.
Based on her last experience, crops in the manor grew twice as fast as normal.
By her calculations, the seedlings should have sprouted by now.
Excited, she hurried to the field—only to find that while the seedlings had indeed sprouted, they were all dead…
They lay limp and gray on the ground, never having taken root.
What happened??
She squatted down to take a closer look and saw patches of white alkali on the soil. The tender seedlings had died en masse, their roots burned.
An Nan frowned.
What was going on? Other than planting more seeds over a larger area, she hadn’t done anything differently this time.
In fact, she’d been more meticulous than before.
Last time, she’d just scattered the seeds carelessly. This time, she’d followed the tutorial and fertilized carefully—so why had things gone wrong?
Wait… Could it be she’d used the wrong fertilizer?
But she’d double-checked the type and amount, following the instructions exactly. There shouldn’t have been a mistake.
An Nan grabbed her tablet and searched the offline resources she’d downloaded earlier.
After a while, she finally found the answer—this kind of seedling burn was indeed caused by over-fertilization.
She double-checked the fertilization method and dosage for isatis root and was sure she hadn’t overdone it.
She fell into deep thought.
Running through everything in her mind, she finally realized—
Last time, she’d barely fertilized at all, and the isatis root had still grown well. That meant the manor’s soil was probably much richer than normal.
If the soil was already that fertile, there was no need to add so much extra fertilizer.
This time, using the standard amount had actually burned the seedlings.
Realizing her mistake, she smacked her forehead in frustration, heart aching as she looked at the dead sprouts.
Helpless, she had to start over.
First, she cleared away the dead seedlings and treated the soil for fertilizer damage.
She covered it with new soil and watered it thoroughly to dilute the fertilizer.
Worried it might not be enough, An Nan decided to open up a new plot for planting.
She’d leave the old plot fallow for now, treat it slowly, and use it again for the next batch of herbs.
An Nan slipped out of her space and busied herself in the manor with her mind. She worked until dawn, finally finishing the new plot and sowing the seeds.
She opened her eyes to find daylight streaming through the window and rubbed her temples.
A whole night spent killing, working out, and farming had drained her energy—she felt utterly exhausted.
She got up, drew the curtains, and called to her dog, “It’s morning. Time to sleep.”
Fugui looked at the tightly covered window, a bit confused.
Why had its owner started going out at night and sleeping during the day lately?
Now it had to adjust its own schedule, too…
Having stayed in the comfort of the house, Fugui had no idea how hot it was outside, or that humans had all changed their routines.
All it knew was, it should stick with its owner.
Otherwise, if she slept during the day and it slept at night, they wouldn’t get to play together.
Fugui obediently curled up next to An Nan and quickly fell asleep.
Ten hours later, both human and dog finally woke up.
After a good sleep, An Nan felt refreshed and energized.
She got up, washed, and seeing it was dark outside, had a simple “breakfast” before heading out again.
Originally, she’d planned to stay home and rest after killing Bai Wenbin, since she’d already gathered almost everything she needed.
According to her memory, the temperature would soar to 60°C in the next few days.
Even with a temperature-regulating suit, her head would still be exposed, so it was best to avoid going out in such extreme heat.
But Bai Wenbin’s mention of the eternal night yesterday had made her sense a new danger.
Bai Wenbin had survived for years in the apocalypse, weathering multiple disasters—what horrors hadn’t he seen?
Yet he’d been so terrified, even trembling at the memory.
That meant the eternal night was truly dangerous.
Still…
All fear comes from lack of firepower.
No matter what mutant animals or violent gangs, as long as they were carbon-based lifeforms, nothing a hot weapon couldn’t handle!
She had a submachine gun in her space, enough for most situations.
But if she could get more guns, she’d be unstoppable.
With the temperature not yet at 60°C, she decided to head out one more time in search of firearms.
This time, An Nan kept a low profile and drove her trusty Wuling minivan.
Her Knight XV was too conspicuous—if anyone noticed, she’d be an easy target.
But a Wuling? There were tons of them on the road; even if someone saw her, they’d never identify her by the car.
After an hour and a half of driving, An Nan arrived at the Linbei City Public Security Bureau.
The precinct covered a large area, with no residential buildings nearby—just an abandoned factory.
Seeing no one around, she put on a hat and mask and slipped into the police compound under cover of darkness.
The building had six floors. An Nan didn’t know the layout, so she used a flashlight, checking room by room.
Many rooms were inaccessible.
Though there were signs of break-ins, the locked rooms remained tightly secured.
Clearly, others had come with the same idea—to get guns—but had underestimated the police station’s security system.
As early as 2037, all departments had upgraded their security.
Even with the power and internet down, you couldn’t break into secure rooms with just a crowbar or hammer.
But that wasn’t a problem for An Nan.
Her blink-and-phase-through-walls ability was finally coming in handy.
All she had to do was enter her space outside the door, then exit within a meter—she’d appear right inside the locked room.
Room by room, she searched for nearly an hour, until at last she found what she’d been longing for: the armory.
Phasing through the wall, her eyes lit up at the sight."
