Chapter 101: Go Handle the Aftermath
Natural Disasters and the End of the World
Gu Zhiyu flipped through the photos in his hand, his expression unchanged.
He calmly replied to Long Cong’an, “I don’t believe in ghosts or gods.”
Long Cong’an said, “But the way those oil tanks disappeared is just too strange! And the things in our mall vanished into thin air too… There’s no scientific explanation for any of this.”
Gu Zhiyu replied, “If science can’t explain it, then we’ll find another explanation.”
Long Cong’an looked at his boss, who seemed as composed as ever, and thought in surprise, Does Boss Gu actually know what’s going on?
As expected, a boss is a boss. You don’t make mountains of money for nothing—his brain really is sharper than mine!
He asked curiously, “So… you mean you know what’s happening?”
Gu Zhiyu said, “No idea.”
Long Cong’an: …
Gu Zhiyu looked up at him. “I don’t believe in ghosts or gods, only in people pretending to be them.”
He recalled the woman whose face couldn’t be seen in the earlier video, and said quietly,
“It must be someone who’s gained some kind of extraordinary power.”
Long Cong’an asked, “So… should we keep investigating?”
Gu Zhiyu didn’t answer, his attractive lips pressing into a thin line.
Long Cong’an watched him nervously.
Oh, my dear boss, please, I’m begging you, let’s not investigate anymore—I’m scared!
Who knows if this thing is a person or a ghost? If they can make oil tanks and goods vanish into thin air, what if they make my organs disappear too?
Damn it, I don’t even listen to ghost stories, I always stay far away from anything supernatural.
I have a lovely wife and young kids at home who are counting on me!
I really can’t afford to go poking around in this!
After a moment’s thought, Gu Zhiyu said, “No need to investigate. We wouldn’t find anything anyway.”
Since they were dealing with someone with mysterious abilities, it was best not to provoke them when the situation was unclear.
Long Cong’an breathed a huge sigh of relief at those words.
“Understood, Boss Gu.”
“What’s the official situation now?”
“It’s chaos. Two top leaders are fighting for control, and from the looks of it, the military guy is most likely to come out on top.”
Gu Zhiyu nodded. “We’re not picking sides. We’ll just focus on dealing with the natural disasters.”
After a pause, he added, “While the authorities are still distracted, take care of the aftermath at those six gas stations.”
“Yes, sir.”
Long Cong’an understood what he meant.
It was already a tough and sensitive time, and they’d stockpiled a huge amount of supplies and fuel—drawing a lot of attention.
If anyone noticed the anomalies at those gas stations and suspected the Gu family had some hidden experts, it would only bring more unnecessary trouble…
Maple Forest Serenity.
An Nan pushed open the door to her home and was immediately greeted by Fugui, who ran over excitedly, mouth wide in a doggy grin.
She played with the dog for a while before going inside to change clothes.
Fugui followed her closely, and when he saw she wasn’t changing into her usual home clothes but instead put on workout gear, he knew his owner was about to start training again.
So he lazily wandered over to his bed, ready to lie down and watch her exercise.
But unexpectedly, An Nan called him over, “Fugui, come here!”
Hearing his owner call, Fugui happily trotted over.
An Nan said seriously, “Starting today, you’re going to train too.”
Fugui tilted his head, looking at her in confusion.
“We’ll start with some physical training.”
She pulled out a toy ball, waved it in front of the dog, then tossed it across the room.
“Go on, fetch it!”
Fugui’s eyes lit up—was his owner going to play with him?
He dashed off, grabbed the ball, and happily brought it back to An Nan.
As soon as she got the ball, An Nan threw it again.
Fugui raced off to fetch it once more.
Back and forth they went for ten minutes, until Fugui was standing there, tongue lolling, panting hard.
An Nan urged him, “Fugui, keep going!”
He didn’t move, just kept panting and looked away.
An Nan turned his little head back toward her. “I’m talking to you—don’t play dumb, keep going!”
Fugui stubbornly kept glancing away, refusing to look at her.
If I can’t see her, I can’t hear her. I, the dog, know nothing!
“If you don’t fetch the ball, dinner’s canceled.”
Fugui whipped his head around, staring at her in disbelief, looking utterly betrayed.
What do you mean, cancel dinner??
An Nan burst out laughing and flicked him on the head.
“Trying to play dumb with me, huh? You sneaky little dog, you understand everything! Go fetch the ball—no fetch, no food.”
Fugui looked resigned, even sighed like a person, and trudged over to get the ball.
After a few more rounds, he simply refused to move, flopping down on the floor, tongue out.
Seeing this, An Nan knew he’d reached his limit.
She quickly gave him some water and quietly recorded today’s exercise time as his starting stamina threshold.
The goal from now on was to keep challenging his limits, making small breakthroughs and improvements.
But because of Fugui’s unique physiology, he was prone to heatstroke and not suited for long, intense exercise, so she had to be extra careful with his training.
An Nan found a notebook and drew up a detailed training plan, factoring in all the safety considerations.
Then, leaving the dog to rest, she started her own workout.
She began with a simple warm-up to get her joints moving.
Then she did twenty minutes of strength training to build muscle, and finished with some martial arts practice.
After an invigorating hour and a half, she finally stopped.
Wiping off her sweat, she went over to tease Fugui.
The silly dog had been resting for over an hour, but still looked exhausted.
She stroked his head and coaxed him,
“Good boy! I’m doing this for your own good. With all these disasters and dangers, and terrifying mutant animals out there, you need to get stronger with me.”
Fugui just rolled his eyes and looked away.
Hmph! I thought you were going to play with me, but you ended up torturing this poor little animal.
I’m ignoring you!
Seeing how stubborn he was, An Nan gave him a light smack on the head.
Fugui yelped and immediately sat up straight, looking obedient.
An Nan: “That’s better. Do you still want dinner?”
What? Dinner?!
He instantly started wagging his tail and gave her a fawning smile.
An Nan couldn’t help but laugh. “What a character!”
She stood up to pour out his food, saying, “Eat up! We’ll keep training at this level tomorrow.”
Fugui let out a couple of obedient whines.
He didn’t know what ‘danger’ or ‘getting stronger’ meant, but he knew that if his owner insisted, she must have her reasons.
Fugui might be a little mischievous and proud at times, but as a dog, his biggest trait was listening to his owner.
So he obediently buried his face in his food bowl and ate just a little bit more than usual."
