Chapter 115: This Isn’t a Dump
Scavenging in the Wasteland
Captain Qiao wore a cold sneer on his face as he looked at Liang Yimo.
“This isn’t a dump—we don’t take in just any trash.”
“You were the ones who wanted to leave in the first place. What are you coming back for now?”
Liang Yimo had been among the earlier members to leave the group.
Back then, Captain Qiao still had some enthusiasm left. When he heard Liang Yimo wanted to leave, he tried several times to persuade him to stay.
But Liang Yimo was determined. He even told Captain Qiao that he was useless, always tolerating the old, weak, sick, and pregnant.
He had bluntly and sincerely advised Captain Qiao,
“You should get rid of the dead weight. Kick out those who are of no use as soon as possible, or your group will fall apart.”
And sure enough, things turned out just as Liang Yimo predicted. As more and more burdens piled up, there was never enough food to go around.
Many of the more capable men grew frustrated with the situation, which was getting out of control.
More and more people left.
Later, with too few scavengers, the problems only got worse.
Liang Yimo hadn’t been wrong. His advice made sense.
“You should’ve stuck to your guns. So why is it, now that you’ve become a burden yourself, you want to come back?”
Captain Qiao’s words were sharp, even a little cruel.
He had no intention of taking Liang Yimo back.
Liang Yimo’s expression shifted.
He gritted his teeth against the pain wracking his body and looked past Captain Qiao to where Shi Yuebai sat in her wheelchair, gliding smoothly over.
“Shi Yuebai!”
Shi Yuebai stopped, turning her round face toward him.
“Who’s in charge here? I want to join you.”
Liang Yimo even lifted his chin a little arrogantly as he spoke.
Before the accident with the search and rescue team, the leaders of every group had treated them with respect.
Because they were useful.
Before Shi Yuebai could say anything, Captain Qiao interjected sarcastically,
“Still so proud, aren’t you? Look at you now.”
If things were going so well for him out there, why come back?
Wasn’t it because he’d carefully picked what he thought was the strongest team, only to run into that lunatic, Xiao Lingye?
Liang Yimo frowned. “Captain Qiao, I’m talking to Shi Yuebai.”
He could tell that Captain Qiao didn’t have much say in the Shi family anymore.
If he wanted in, he’d have to go through one of them.
The Shi family had food, and their women were all fools.
Even if he did nothing but eat and drink every day, he could live off those women for the rest of his life.
Yes, that was exactly Liang Yimo’s plan.
His own search and rescue team had abandoned him.
They’d even taken some of the equipment with them.
Why should he stay with Xiao Lingye’s team and clean up their mess?
The Shi family was the best option he had left.
Finally, Shi Yuebai moved. She raised her hand and beckoned Liang Yimo over.
Captain Qiao immediately frowned.
“Yuebai, someone who leaves once will leave again.”
Besides, this wasn’t even Liang Yimo’s first time betraying a team.
He’d left Qiao’s group first, then Xiao Lingye’s.
People like him only ever chose whatever path benefited them the most.
Shi Yuebai replied offhandedly, “Let him come over.”
Seeing Shi Yuebai’s firm attitude, Captain Qiao had no choice. He lay down across the ditch and set up a ladder for Liang Yimo.
Liang Yimo’s face was full of smugness as he crossed the ditch on the ladder.
The moment he stood in front of Shi Yuebai, he already considered himself the master here.
“Shi Yuebai, how often do the mercenaries come by?”
“Get me something to eat and drink first. I’m starving.”
Through the swirling fog, a fat figure appeared behind Liang Yimo.
Compared to Shi Yuebai, Pang Zhenggong actually looked slim.
So Liang Yimo didn’t pay him any mind.
Seeing Shi Yuebai unmoved, he even pointed his finger at her nose.
“You need to move around. If you don’t exercise, you’ll get even fatter and die.”
“My weight bothering you?”
Shi Yuebai grabbed the finger pressed to her nose.
Though she was sitting, the look in her eyes made Liang Yimo shiver for no reason.
“Or is it that I’m eating your rice?”
Shi Yuebai’s grip slowly tightened.
Liang Yimo felt a twinge of pain, but didn’t take it seriously.
Just a fat woman. Once he was in charge here, he’d sell Shi Yuebai off to one of those cannibal teams.
He’d get a good price for her.
Pang Zhenggong stood behind Liang Yimo, holding a big wrench.
“Yeah, what’s it to you? Didn’t you already leave? Couldn’t hack it with Xiao Lingye’s team?”
Hearing that familiar voice, Liang Yimo felt a chill run down his spine.
He tried to turn and look, but his finger suddenly snapped with a loud crack.
Shi Yuebai said, “I hate it when people point at me. It’s rude.”
“Ah!”
Liang Yimo screamed.
His leg injury hadn’t healed, he’d just been beaten up by Xiao Lingye, and now Shi Yuebai had broken his finger.
The pain brought back memories of the last time Shi Yuebai had beaten him up and stripped him of all his clothes.
“Shi Yuebai, let go! I really want to join you guys!”
He didn’t have time to see who was behind him—he collapsed to his knees, shaking all over from the pain.
Pang Zhenggong said, “When have you ever not ‘really wanted’ to join?”
He’d once truly wanted to join Pang Zhenggong’s search and rescue team.
Then he’d truly wanted to join Captain Qiao’s group under the bridge.
After that, he’d truly wanted to join Xiao Lingye’s muscle team.
Every time, he was sincere.
“But your sincerity—even a dog wouldn’t eat it.”
Pang Zhenggong grabbed Liang Yimo by the neck.
The longer they’d been with Shi Yuebai, the more time they’d spent living in this white fog, the clearer their minds became—and the stronger they got.
Captain Qiao poked his head up from the ditch, then quickly pulled the ladder away.
Liang Yimo was trapped.
Only now did he open his eyes wide in terror, staring at Pang Zhenggong.
“You—you’re not dead?”
“That’s right, I’m not dead. Sorry to disappoint you,” Pang Zhenggong said through gritted teeth.
Shi Yuebai let go of Liang Yimo’s finger, her face suddenly breaking into a bright smile.
“Pang Zhenggong, ask your good buddy here—did the team next door stash anything good?”
“Captain Qiao’s people haven’t eaten in days.”
These past few days, though the old, weak, sick, and pregnant hadn’t said anything, they’d been wandering outside the ditch from time to time.
They used to have three meals a day—mushrooms stewed with potatoes—but now, suddenly, nothing.
Many wanted to ask but didn’t dare.
They were afraid of angering Captain Qiao and being abandoned again.
Anyway, the team next door was supposed to be the strongest in the wasteland, right?
Let’s get some food from them for these anxious old, weak, sick, and pregnant.
I’m sure Xiao Lingye won’t mind.
——
Today was a bit hot. I wore a sweater and walked over ten thousand steps.
On the way home, I started getting a headache, and I threw up twice in the afternoon.
I feel a bit better now, so I got up to update.
Not sure what’s wrong with me."
