Chapter 99: The Death of Bai Wenbin

Natural Disasters and the End of the World

Eternal Night?

An Nan thought to herself, even just hearing the name was suffocating and oppressive. As expected, there was never any such thing as an easy disaster.

But her face remained calm. “Explain in detail.”

Bai Wenbin didn’t continue right away. Instead, he stared at the water in her hand, swallowing hard.

An Nan knew he was desperately thirsty, but she had no intention of giving him any.

Once the body’s physical suffering eased, it was only natural for other thoughts to arise. Only by keeping him craving water and food would he have no energy left to argue with her.

She took a big gulp of water and picked up a piece of pork rib, popping it into her mouth.

Then, looking at Bai Wenbin, whose eyes were glued to her, she said, “Hurry up and talk! I only brought out this much food. If you keep dawdling, I’ll eat it all myself.”

Bai Wenbin grew anxious. “I already told you what the next disaster is! At least let me have some water and food first, right?”

He looked at An Nan, trying to bargain. “If you don’t give me anything to eat, I won’t say another word!”

An Nan elegantly wiped her mouth with a napkin, then stood up unhurriedly.

“Seems like you still haven’t figured out the situation. I have a spatial ability. Even if you don’t tell me anything, it won’t affect me much. But it’ll be a big problem for you. Since you don’t want to talk, I’ll just help you keep your mouth shut forever.”

As she spoke, she raised her bayonet again.

Bai Wenbin was scared out of his wits and immediately shouted, “No, no, no! I’ll talk! I’ll talk! Spare my life!”

An Nan sneered. “That depends on how well you talk. Only if I’m satisfied will I let you live.”

Bai Wenbin hurriedly began to recount his past life in detail.

“The Extreme Cold lasted for over two years. Just when we were about to collapse, suddenly, the temperature started to rise. But… you know, after so many disasters, no one dared to believe the apocalypse would really end. Sure enough, when the temperature finally climbed to 23 degrees, the most comfortable temperature, something strange happened. That day, the sun set as usual—but it never rose again! The world was plunged into twenty-four hours of unending darkness.”

At this point, Bai Wenbin seemed to recall something terrifying and couldn’t help but shudder.

Seeing An Nan’s impatient expression, he hurried on, “The darkness bred even more evil. Except for the official bases guarded by the military, which were barely safe, everywhere else became a paradise for maniacs. ‘Maniacs’—well, they were just people driven insane by the apocalypse, turning into psychotic killers. They roamed in gangs, killing anyone they saw. And then… there were terrifying animals…”

He suddenly stopped.

An Nan frowned. “What kind of animals?”

Bai Wenbin’s lips trembled, as if recalling some horrific scene, and he couldn’t finish his sentence.

An Nan grabbed him by the collar. “Keep talking!”

But Bai Wenbin was shaking all over, unable to utter a complete sentence.

An Nan, losing patience, slashed him again.

He clutched his wound, groaning in pain and curling up in agony. After a long while, he still couldn’t speak clearly, only managing to convey that some animals had undergone terrifying mutations.

Seeing that he was too frightened to explain, An Nan changed the subject. “How long did the Eternal Night last?”

This time, Bai Wenbin answered clearly.

“I don’t know. Not long after Eternal Night began, I was killed by maniacs. When I opened my eyes again, I was here, and then I met you.”

After hearing this, An Nan fell silent, thinking for a moment.

She couldn’t help but wonder: Why did this scum get to be reborn too?

Countless people had died in the apocalypse. If everyone could be reborn, wouldn’t the world be in chaos?

At least for now, aside from herself and Bai Wenbin, she hadn’t met any other reborn people.

So what was special—or similar—about the two of them…?

An Nan frowned in thought for a while, then asked, “Where’s my bracelet?”

Bai Wenbin instinctively glanced at the jade bracelet on her wrist, then realized she was asking about the one he’d stolen from her in their previous life.

He shrank back and said, “I… I ate it…”

An Nan was stunned. “Ate it?”

Bai Wenbin explained, “After you died, I tried to summon the space, but no matter what I did—bleeding on it, heating it, kneeling to it—nothing worked. In desperation, I smashed it with a hammer and swallowed the pieces bit by bit. But it was useless… the space just wouldn’t appear.”

An Nan was a little surprised.

When the bracelet was on her wrist, it was harder than diamond—nothing could damage it. Even when the siblings chopped off her hand and the bracelet fell to the ground, it didn’t break.

How could he have smashed and swallowed it?

She thought for a moment: Maybe because the space had come with her when she was reborn, the bracelet, as its vessel, had lost its function and become an ordinary, fragile piece of jewelry?

But not entirely ordinary.

At the very least, Bai Wenbin’s rebirth was probably because he’d swallowed the bracelet.

To confirm her guess, she asked, “Did Qian Yinger die too?”

Bai Wenbin nodded.

An Nan let out a sigh of relief.

Since Qian Yinger had died but hadn’t come back like him, it meant Bai Wenbin’s rebirth was likely due to the bracelet.

Thank goodness not just anyone could be reborn so easily.

Otherwise, if every person she killed came back, wouldn’t it be like an endless cycle?

Mentioning Qian Yinger’s death, Bai Wenbin’s expression turned sorrowful. “My cousin took a blow from a maniac for me. That’s how she died. She suffered a lot before she went…”

An Nan’s expression was the opposite—she felt quite pleased.

Knowing that those who killed her had met bad ends themselves, she felt at ease.

She curled her lips. “Tsk tsk, what a touching sibling bond! Looks like Qian Yinger really loved her big brother. As an old classmate, I’ll grant her wish and send you down to join her.”

With that, she put away the bayonet and took out a chainsaw from her space.

As the chainsaw roared to life, Bai Wenbin’s alarm bells went off and his eyes nearly popped out of his head. “I know your secret! You can’t just kill me like this!”

An Nan found it funny. “Is that a threat?”

“All the more reason to send you on your way! After all, only the dead can keep secrets forever.”

With that, she raised the chainsaw and cut off his arm.

Bai Wenbin was powerless to resist, the agony nearly making him faint.

He realized he’d said the wrong thing and, using his last bit of strength, begged, “An Nan, I really know I was wrong! Please, spare me! I really don’t want to die again…”

An Nan turned a deaf ear and continued sawing off his leg.

She started with his limbs, patiently cutting him apart bit by bit.

Blood splattered everywhere as Bai Wenbin watched himself being dismembered, suffering a terror and pain beyond anything he’d ever known.

In this drawn-out process, he once again felt his life slipping away…

Finally, in utter terror and agony, he closed his eyes for the last time."
