Chapter 118: Turning the Tables
Married to the Childless Commander
Zhang Shuwan was instantly startled. What was going on?
Could something have happened to Jianing?
She immediately regretted leaving Jianing outside alone, especially since Jianing was so pretty.
“Jianing?”
Zhang Shuwan quickly started putting on her pants while calling out for Gu Jianing.
“Hey, Shuwan-jie, I’m here.”
Hearing Gu Jianing’s response, Zhang Shuwan breathed a sigh of relief. Judging by her voice, Jianing seemed fine.
But then what was that sound just now?
That loud bang had been so clear, Zhang Shuwan was sure she hadn’t imagined it.
Still, she hurriedly finished putting on her pants and rushed out.
“Jianing—ah! What is that?”
Zhang Shuwan had just spotted Gu Jianing and was about to speak when she suddenly saw a man lying on the ground. She jumped in fright.
It was a tall, thin man in a gray jacket, lying there with his eyes closed and a handkerchief covering his face.
Standing calmly beside him was Gu Jianing.
“Oh, he’s a human trafficker. He just tried to smother me with that cloth,” Gu Jianing said casually.
Zhang Shuwan’s eyes widened. “What? A human trafficker?!”
“Yeah. He’s been following us since we left the state-run restaurant. I noticed him back then—he trailed us for over an hour. Just now, when you went into the public restroom, he probably thought it was his chance and made his move.”
“He tried to cover my mouth with this handkerchief. I think it’s drugged. Luckily, I was quick—I grabbed it from him and pressed it over his mouth instead. Then he just collapsed.”
Gu Jianing recounted it lightly, but Zhang Shuwan’s heart was pounding in terror.
Oh my god, a human trafficker!
And Jianing had noticed him back at the restaurant—he’d followed them for over an hour, and she hadn’t noticed a thing.
“Jianing, you should have told me.”
“If I’d known, I wouldn’t have left you outside alone to use the restroom. If anything had happened to you, how would I explain it to Commander Sheng?”
Zhang Shuwan imagined coming to town with Gu Jianing, only for Jianing to be kidnapped and her returning alone.
What would she say to Commander Sheng?
If Jianing went missing, Commander Sheng would probably go crazy.
He might seem calm and composed most of the time, but from watching the two of them together, Zhang Shuwan could tell how much he cared about Gu Jianing.
Especially now that Jianing was pregnant.
Thank goodness, thank goodness Jianing was okay—and even managed to turn the tables on her attacker.
Gu Jianing: I deliberately gave him a chance to act alone—how could I tell you?
Besides, Gu Jianing thought, if she’d told Zhang Shuwan, the latter might have gotten nervous and blown their cover, and she definitely wouldn’t have let Jianing stay outside alone.
That would have made it much harder to catch the guy.
“Oh, Shuwan-jie, I just thought I could handle it myself.”
“See? He’s the one lying on the ground now, isn’t he?”
In fact, Gu Jianing had been fully confident.
She had just exchanged for a “Freeze for 5 Seconds” skill in her system, which had cost her 10 points.
As long as she activated it, anyone she looked at would be frozen for five seconds.
Five seconds might not sound like much, but you could do a lot in that time.
She’d also exchanged for a “Popeye’s Strength” skill, which could instantly boost her strength tenfold.
Originally, she’d planned to freeze the guy and then beat him up.
But when she saw the drugged handkerchief in his hand, she changed her mind.
So, after freezing him, she snatched the handkerchief and, while he was still in shock, pressed it over his mouth and nose.
The drug must have been strong, because his eyes rolled back almost immediately and he collapsed to the ground with a loud thud.
Right after that, Zhang Shuwan called for her and came out of the restroom.
Even though the man was already down and Gu Jianing seemed confident, Zhang Shuwan was still shaken.
“Jianing, next time something like this happens, you should tell me.”
“After all, two heads are better than one.”
“Seriously, we came out together—if something happened to you, I wouldn’t know what to do.”
“Commander Sheng would probably lose his mind too!”
Gu Jianing linked arms with Zhang Shuwan. “Okay, okay, it’s my fault. I should have told you. I’ll be more careful next time.”
But thinking of the promise she’d made to Sheng Zexi yesterday, Gu Jianing felt a little guilty. Great, it was probably going to be even harder to go out in the future.
“Pah, pah, pah, there won’t be a next time.” They definitely didn’t want to run into another human trafficker.
From now on, may everything be safe and sound.
“Jianing, what should we do now? Should we call the police?” Zhang Shuwan asked.
Gu Jianing nodded. “Yes, call the police.”
Ten minutes later, Gu Jianing and Zhang Shuwan arrived at the police station, with the man being carried in by the officers—he still hadn’t woken up.
While Gu Jianing was giving her statement, the officers, upon learning they were military wives, immediately treated them with great respect.
“Do you know a Commander Sheng Zexi?” a young officer asked.
Gu Jianing and Zhang Shuwan exchanged a glance. Gu Jianing replied, “He’s my husband.”
The officer’s eyes lit up. “So you’re the sister-in-law! Hello, I’m Zhang Weidong, a close friend of Brother Sheng.”
From Zhang Weidong’s explanation, Gu Jianing learned that he and Sheng Zexi had been friends for three or four years.
They’d met when Sheng Zexi had saved Zhang Weidong by chance, and ever since, Zhang Weidong had looked up to him as an elder brother.
“I’d heard Brother Sheng got married, and I always wondered what kind of woman could win his heart. Now that I’ve met you, I understand why he chose you.”
Such a beauty, and so calm even when facing a human trafficker—truly remarkable.
No wonder someone as proud as Brother Sheng would fall for her.
Knowing that Zhang Weidong was Sheng Zexi’s friend and brother-in-arms, Gu Jianing relaxed and recounted what had happened with the trafficker.
“By the way, do you know about the Qin family case?” Gu Jianing asked Zhang Weidong.
He nodded. “I worked on that case.”
Good.
“Qin De was planning to sell Qin Tian to traffickers. I’m wondering if this is the same guy?”
Zhang Weidong pondered and took notes. “It’s possible. We’ll focus on this during the investigation.”
After finishing her statement, Gu Jianing walked out of the station and immediately saw Sheng Zexi approaching, his expression calm and serious.
Gu Jianing: ?!! Why is he here?
Beside her, Zhang Weidong scratched his head. “I called Brother Sheng.”
Gu Jianing: Well, okay then.
The next second, Sheng Zexi walked up and pulled Gu Jianing into his arms."
