Chapter 101: Captain Sheng, Congratulations—Your Wife Is Pregnant!
Married to the Childless Commander
""Did you buy these?"" Gu Jianing asked, a little surprised.
""Yeah, it’s New Year’s, after all. I thought fireworks would make things more festive."" As he spoke, Sheng Zexi picked up a match and lit the sparkler in Gu Jianing’s hand, then lit his own.
The sparklers sizzled, sending out little bursts of light that instantly illuminated a corner of the dim courtyard—and lit up Gu Jianing’s face.
She gently waved her sparkler, tracing shapes in the air. The light reflected in her already beautiful eyes, making them shine even brighter.
Sheng Zexi crouched beside her, quietly watching the fireworks bloom. He turned to Gu Jianing and said, ""Ningning, Happy New Year.""
Gu Jianing was momentarily stunned. She turned to look at him, only to find Sheng Zexi gazing at her, his eyes filled with deep affection.
A gentle smile curved Gu Jianing’s lips, and her eyes sparkled with happiness. ""Mm, Happy New Year to you too, Xi-ge.""
She reached out her hand. ""Let’s take care of each other in the new year, okay?""
Sheng Zexi chuckled at her words, but immediately reached out, taking her hand in his and holding it tightly. He said solemnly, ""I’ll take care of you—always, for a lifetime.""
With fireworks sparkling around them, the two exchanged a smile. In that moment, it was as if they could see the decades ahead, supporting each other, growing old together.
After New Year’s Eve, the first day of the new year arrived.
Sheng Zexi didn’t have training and accompanied her to stroll around the nearby county town. Of course, they also called Grandpa and Grandma Sang in Beijing to wish them a happy new year.
As for the Sheng family, Sheng Zexi didn’t mention them, and Gu Jianing didn’t ask.
After all, when Sheng Zexi married her, he hadn’t told his family.
From Fang Manping, he’d learned that his father-in-law was furious and dissatisfied with his marriage to her. Plus, Sheng Zexi and his father had never gotten along. Since that was the case, why should she go looking for trouble?
She married Sheng Zexi. As long as he treated her well, that was enough.
Everything else was secondary—she didn’t really care.
Other people’s approval or disapproval didn’t matter to her. After all, what’s done is done, and she was the one living her life.
On the second day of the new year, Sheng Zexi returned to training, but Gu Jianing was still thinking about the blood test results from the hospital.
Fighting off sleepiness, her eyes half-open, she reminded Sheng Zexi, ""Remember to pick up my test results from the hospital when you come home for lunch.""
Sheng Zexi patted her head. ""Okay, I know. Go back to sleep.""
""Mm."" After giving her instructions, Gu Jianing closed her eyes and drifted off again. Classes at the training center would start on the fifth, so there weren’t many days left to sleep in.
Sheng Zexi watched her fall asleep again, tucked her hand under the covers, straightened the quilt, and kissed her forehead before quietly leaving.
The first training session of the new year was full of energy. After finishing in the morning, training was done for the day. After all, it was just the start of the year—no official missions yet.
After training, Sheng Zexi remembered Gu Jianing’s request and headed to the military hospital.
Coincidentally, Dr. Hao was on duty today, with Peng Wenjing beside him. When Sheng Zexi entered, the two seemed to be chatting.
""Dr. Hao, I’m here to pick up my wife’s blood test results.""
Peng Wenjing hadn’t expected to run into Sheng Zexi again and had the urge to turn and leave.
To be honest, she used to hope for chance encounters with Sheng Zexi. But now, with her feelings for him gone, seeing him again just felt awkward.
Still...
When Sheng Zexi walked in, he didn’t even glance at her—it was as if he didn’t know her at all. Peng Wenjing couldn’t help but feel a pang of bitterness.
Was Sheng Zexi really so heartless? Even if he didn’t like her, they at least knew each other. Did he really have to pretend otherwise?
""Captain Sheng, you’re here for Comrade Gu’s test results, right?""
""Wenjing, go get the results from the table over there for Captain Sheng,"" Dr. Hao instructed.
Dr. Hao was good friends with Peng Wenjing’s sister-in-law. Peng Wenjing was currently transitioning from nurse to doctor and was a diligent student.
When she wasn’t in training classes, she studied alongside Dr. Hao.
Hearing his instructions, Peng Wenjing walked over to the table, muttering to herself: What kind of test result is this? She vaguely remembered seeing Sheng Zexi and his wife at the hospital on New Year’s Eve. Was the woman sick, or was it something else?
With these thoughts, Peng Wenjing started searching through the reports on the table and quickly found one with Gu Jianing’s name.
She glanced at it out of habit, and when she saw the results, she froze. So it was this kind of test.
That fast? How long have they even been married?
But Peng Wenjing didn’t linger. She handed the report to Dr. Hao.
Dr. Hao took a look, then handed it to Sheng Zexi.
""Captain Sheng, congratulations! The report shows your wife is pregnant—one month along already.""
Dr. Hao’s beaming smile and his words left Sheng Zexi frozen in place, his hand halfway out to take the report.
He was truly stunned.
It was as if, for a moment, his mind stopped working—or as if he’d been struck by a pie falling from the sky, leaving him dazed.
It took a while before he snapped out of it. His voice trembled slightly and was barely above a whisper as he asked, ""Dr. Hao, are you sure? My wife is really pregnant?""
Dr. Hao, having seen plenty of dumbfounded fathers-to-be, wasn’t surprised. He replied warmly, ""Of course I’m sure, Captain Sheng. The report doesn’t lie.""
""See for yourself.""
Right.
Sheng Zexi snapped back to reality and hurriedly looked at the report, though his hand was shaking with nerves.
Sure enough, at the end of the report, it clearly stated: Confirmed pregnancy, one month.
So Ningning’s intuition was right.
Ningning had said that mothers and babies are connected.
She said she was pregnant—and she really was!
Ningning was going to be a mother, and he was going to be a father!
""Captain Sheng, go home and share the good news with your wife!""
Sheng Zexi nodded quickly. ""Thank you, Dr. Hao!""
After thanking him, Sheng Zexi turned and hurried out, walking as if he was floating on air.
Back at the family quarters, Gu Jianing was in the kitchen, preparing lunch. She’d already started the rice so that when Sheng Zexi got home, she could start cooking right away."
