Chapter 89: Is Overthinking a Disease?

Fierce Aboriginal Woman from the 80s

Lu Chuan hadn’t even had time to properly appreciate how wonderful his wife was, but over on Fang Yuan’s side, she was already dragging Old Man Lu around, sweeping the site for hidden dangers. Any unsafe spots had to be dealt with.

The father and daughter-in-law duo worked well together: “Dad, do you remember everything Lu Chuan said? Let’s tidy things up properly—turns out it really matters at critical moments.”

Old Man Lu was a little embarrassed to admit that he’d thought his son was just trying to please his wife. Who would’ve guessed there’d actually be an inspection for this stuff? “Mm, the second boy’s got a good head on his shoulders.”

Fang Yuan said, “Compared to him, we’re a bit lacking in that department.”

Lu Chuan, listening nearby, blushed, thinking they were praising him.

Just then, Wu Hu and his crew came back, all looking excited, with a big stack of safety helmets piled on the truck frame.

Before the truck had even come to a full stop, Wu Hu was already dragging Lu Chuan over, shouting excitedly, “When luck comes, you can’t stop it! There’s no other worksite in the county like ours—inspectors come, take a look, and leave right away. We’re one of a kind!”

Then he said, “Look, is this the kind of safety helmet you mentioned? I bought a whole stack with my own money. From now on, everyone working here has to wear one.”

Wu Hu was thrilled. “Can you believe our luck? We’re already getting a name for ourselves in the county. Bro, from now on, whatever you say, I’ll believe it.”

This was what people called “believing in your magic.”

Lu Chuan was a bit embarrassed. “Just lucky, I guess.” Luck that came from trying to please his wife.

Honestly, he broke out in a cold sweat thinking about it. If the project had been stopped over something like this, with deadlines written into the contract, it would’ve been a huge mess.

If the client insisted on the original timeline, getting paid would’ve been tough.

This was a lesson learned—next time he’d be even more careful about contract deadlines.

Lu Chuan summed it up: “Fifth Brother, treat your wife well, pamper her more, and good luck will come your way too.” That’s how he got his luck.

Even the way his wife looked at him was different now. Lu Chuan straightened his back with pride.

Wu Hu nodded along, then suddenly realized, “Wait, you were just trying to please Fang Yuan, weren’t you? I knew it!”

But hey, he did it well. He even got lucky because of it. Wu Hu said, “Can’t believe that actually worked. Talk about a stroke of luck!”

And you know, with everyone wearing a helmet, the site looked much more professional as people moved around.

Wu Hu said, “You think those inspectors will come back? If they do, and see how prepared we are, they’ll probably praise us.”

Lu Chuan couldn’t help laughing. “Fifth Brother, don’t go wishing for them to come back.”

Wu Hu grinned, “I’m just excited! When luck comes, you can’t stop it. We’ve made a name for ourselves in the county now.”

Wu Hu continued, “A lot of worksites outside have been shut down, but word’s gotten out that we’re still running. Tons of people are asking about coming to work here. All the good workers are coming to me.”

Lu Chuan understood—now that everyone knew their site was reliable, people would come to them for work, and finding labor would be easier too. “Fifth Brother, let’s keep things steady.”

Wu Hu patted his chest. “Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing. This time, I get to pick and choose my crew.”

Lu Chuan just smiled. His Fifth Brother was shrewd—just like his mother-in-law.

Wu Hu said, “Bro, I’m telling you, we’ve got a bright future ahead. Maybe you shouldn’t bother with school anymore.”

Fang Yuan kicked Wu Hu from behind. “Stop trying to lure him away. Which is more important?”

Wu Hu grinned, “I’m just running my mouth, trying to highlight how important my brother-in-law is. Would I really stop him from going to school?”

Lu Chuan took Fang Yuan’s hand, not even sparing Wu Hu a glance. “That’s not luring—wrong word.”

Fang Yuan said carelessly, “Whatever, as long as you know what I mean. Why fuss over the details?”

Lu Chuan said, “See, when have I ever been wrong? Didn’t you say you’d listen to me? I’m telling you, ‘luring’ isn’t the right word here.”

Wu Hu thought to himself, “Would my sister really let you have the last word? You’re just asking for trouble.”

Fang Yuan said dismissively, “Then what word should I use? So picky.”

Lu Chuan pulled her along. “Come on, let’s go check the dictionary. You can pick whichever word you think fits best.”

And with Wu Hu staring in disbelief, the young couple walked off together.

His brother-in-law had just “lured” his sister away right in front of him. Wu Hu was sure he’d used the right word—she’d been lured away.

Wu Hu said, “My brother-in-law’s got some skills.” Then he added, “Maybe I should learn a thing or two. If I had even half his talent, my wife would’ve come home ages ago.”

That matter was settled, but Lu Chuan and Wu Hu’s construction team was now famous in the county. They didn’t have to go looking for work—jobs came to them.

Before one project was even finished, people were already lining up to hire them for the next.

Now Lu Chuan was running back and forth with Wu Hu between two sites. He’d negotiate the terms for the next project, tell Wu Hu what to watch out for, and as soon as this one wrapped up, they’d start the next.

Fang Yuan was the happiest of all—her concrete mixer would never be out of work. That was all she cared about.

But there was a problem: Lu Chuan was about to go back to school. With only Wu Hu left to oversee things, the only one who could help him was Fang Yuan.

Lu Chuan couldn’t help but worry.

And that wasn’t all—Wu Hu, still riding his wave of excitement, urged Lu Chuan to take on a few more projects while they had the chance. Their reputation was solid, and finding workers was easy.

But Lu Chuan shook his head firmly. “Fifth Brother, this is as much as we can handle right now. No matter how much money is out there, we can’t earn it all. If you trust me, listen to me—let’s take it step by step, steady and sure. Building a good reputation is more important than anything.”

Wu Hu finally understood what “reputation” meant. The reason so much work was coming their way was because their reputation was good.

It was tough, though, seeing all that money out there and not being able to grab it. Both Wu Hu and Fang Yuan felt the pain.

The two of them gritted their teeth and stomped their feet. “We’ll listen to you.”

Old Man Lu thought to himself, watching those two act like they were throwing money away—what a strange sight.

Lu Chuan said to Wu Hu, “If I were here, we could take on one more project. We could split up and each supervise a site. But since I’m leaving, it’s all on you, and you can’t be everywhere at once. I’m the one holding you back from making a fortune.”

Wu Hu replied, “Don’t say that. We agreed to make money together. As long as there’s work to do, we’ll make money. Even if there isn’t, I can wait for you to finish college. I’m not in a rush. Bite off more than you can chew, and you’ll choke—I get that much.”

Fang Yuan said, “Don’t make it sound so noble. You just want to make big money.”

Lu Chuan just laughed. Fang Yuan had confidence in him—that’s why she thought so highly of him. Whatever Lu Chuan was thinking about, his ears turned red again.

Wu Hu said, “Bro, why are you blushing?”

Fang Yuan glanced at him, a little worried. “One of these days, I’ll take him to the clinic for a checkup. His face gets hot and red at the drop of a hat—what if there’s something wrong?”

If overthinking counts as a disease, then Lu Chuan probably has it.

Lu Chuan’s face fell. “No need.” He turned and walked away.

Wu Hu raised an eyebrow—even the backs of his ears were red. “My brother-in-law blushes a lot.”

Fang Yuan said, “Doesn’t he?”

Wu Hu thought, “I haven’t seen it that often. Must be he only blushes around Fang Yuan.”
